Thoughts

No words can describe our gorilla experience, it was absolutely amazing and exceeded all our expectations. A famile of 25, we were lucky enough to be allocated to the best family out of 18 in the park. They only allow 8 people for one hour to visit a family per day. It is very well regulated, and it is evident our tourist dollar is benefitting many.

We then travelled to Nairobi for the night and left early the next morning for the six hour drive to Masai mara. The road is dreadful, it would be closed for safety reasons in Australia, but here it's their major highway.

Within metres of entering the Masai mara gates we saw zebras. Since then we have been totally staggered by the number and variety of wildlife we have seen. Literally millions of wildebeest, tens of thousands of zebras, giraffes, lions, a cheetah today with four cubs(?), every day brings a new experience. Fantastic.

Yesterday we agreed to the suggestion by our guide to visit a Masai village, which I am now regretting. I had forgotten how badly they treat their women. Apart from circumcision of the women, the Masai warrior proudly told me that the women build the houses (out of cow dung), they look after the cows, the kids, collect the wood and water, and do all the cooking. Not sure whats left for the men to do!! They buy their wives for 10 cows. They drink blood, milk and eat meat. We were told our "donation" to visit went towards sending the kids to school, but thinking about this overnight I asked today and had it confirmed that it is only the men that get to educated!!!! I want my money back.

We are off to see a potential migration river crossing of wildebeest tomorrow, but I think we are a week or two late. We tried today but no joy, we didn't mind though, the Mara River was great to see, full of hippos, crocs, birds everywhere.
